Can you get Wegovy without going through your GP?

For many people the biggest hurdle between them and Wegovy isn't the price — it's the thought of asking their GP for it. So let's settle it straight away: yes, in the UK you can get Wegovy without a GP referral, completely legally. Regulated online pharmacies and clinics employ their own prescribers, run the health checks themselves, and post the pen to your door. No letter, no referral, no GP sign-off — though keeping your GP in the loop afterwards is still a smart move, as we'll explain.

Why you don't need your GP's permission

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only medicine, but "prescription-only" has never meant "GP-only". UK rules allow doctors and pharmacist independent prescribers working within regulated services to assess patients and issue prescriptions — and that's who sits behind every legitimate online Wegovy service. Order through a GPhC-registered pharmacy or CQC-regulated online clinic and their prescriber reviews your health questionnaire and, if you're suitable, writes the prescription within the same service. The consultation replaces the GP appointment; nothing about the prescription itself is skipped.

The medicine is identical to what an NHS clinic would supply — the same once-weekly pre-filled pen, dispensed by a registered UK pharmacy. None of the 24 providers in our Wegovy price table asks for a referral letter, because none needs one.

The three routes to Wegovy — and where your GP actually fits

The NHS path is the only one that runs through your GP — and it's the narrowest of the three.

• The NHS route. Your GP generally can't prescribe Wegovy directly. NICE guidance routes NHS Wegovy through specialist weight-management services, normally for up to two years — the GP's role is referring you into a service with strict entry criteria and, often, a long waiting list. The cheapest route by far if you qualify and can wait.
• Regulated online providers. The no-referral route this guide is about. You complete a provider's free questionnaire, their prescriber reviews it, and an approved order arrives within days. You pay privately — first months run from £79.97 at standard prices, or from £59.99 with new-customer codes.
• Private in-person clinics. Some private doctors and weight-loss clinics prescribe Wegovy face to face — fine if you'd prefer that, but consultation fees usually sit on top of the medicine cost, which is why online has become the default.

Getting Wegovy without a GP referral: the four steps

1. Pick a regulated provider. Check the pharmacy appears on the GPhC register, that online doctor services are CQC-registered, and that the site insists on a consultation before selling. Our safe-buying checklist covers the red flags.
2. Complete the free consultation. You'll give your height, weight, medical history and current medicines. UK providers typically prescribe for adults with a BMI of 30+, or 27+ alongside a weight-related condition, and most ask for photos or a short video to verify your details. Answer honestly — the decision is only as good as the information behind it.
3. Wait for the prescriber's decision. Often a matter of hours. The prescriber can say no — a service that approves everyone isn't assessing anyone. Our walkthrough of the online consultation shows the questions before you face them.
4. Delivery and follow-up. Approved orders ship in cold-chain packaging, usually within 1–3 working days, with next-day options at several providers. You start on the 0.25 mg dose and step up roughly every four weeks, and a reputable provider reviews you before each increase.

No referral needed — but do tell your GP

Getting the prescription without your GP doesn't mean cutting them out entirely. Most providers ask during the consultation whether you'd like your GP notified; we'd encourage you to say yes. Your GP's record is the one place all your medicines meet, and a complete record helps whoever treats you next spot interactions quickly. If anything worries you once you've started, your GP or pharmacist is the right first call, and suspected side effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

And if a provider declines you, resist the urge to shop the same answers around until someone says yes — and never turn to social-media sellers or "compounded semaglutide" copies, which are unregulated in the UK. A decline is clinical information, not an obstacle course.
